You work hard to grow as a musician. Its only fair if your guitar is doing its part too. Poorly set action, a factory carved nut and lower quality controls are just some of the issues that can hamper progress and become a cause of frustration.
Some simple steps.
You can achieve great results with very subtle changes. If you have a Les Paul style bridge, try raising or lowering it by small amounts to change the action. If its a strat type instrument, your saddles will raise and lower with a tiny allen key. Action is adjustable so that you can find the string height you like. Lower is not always better. If you love to play rhythm, a little height will give you sustain. Equally, you might tolerate a bit of fret buzz for lower action if getting your chops on is what you're after.
